Good Night Sweet Prince...

...may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. ---Shakespeare.

Today our cat, Hamlet, passed. He lived a good long life, nearly 20 years. Our son is 4 & we have not told him yet. I'm not sure how much he understands. We have buried many loving pets over the years, & two beautiful daughters. Our son knows he has two sisters because we visit the cemetery all the time, but will he put that together with the passing of his cat? Who knows. He understands Hamlet is...I mean was old & sick. He was so gentle & loving towards him w/ a great level of compassion for him. When he was going off to start his first day of school this year he wanted me to take his picture with Hamlet. I'm glad we did, though it was not the best pose.

I don't now if years from now he will even remember Hamlet.

...but we will.

Im sorry about Hamlet. He's the cat i remember most over the years. And that's an interesting thought you proposed about whether he would connect his idea of his sisters with his idea of the passing of Hamlet.

I should say again that the bottom photo really is amazing. I feel like so many emotions were captured in such a juxtaposed situation.

Oh my, I am so sorry about your cat...we too have a cat and dog. Louise, our cat is going on 9. I'm not sure how our boys would react if we lost her. That's a great photo you have to remember him by!

I was caught by that last image of the cat and dog together, so wonderful. And then I read the post, and am so sorry for the loss of your kitty. My 9yo son was reading over my shoulder and I asked him - do you think the little boy will understand? And he said yes. How did it go, is it still going, when you told your son?
